Tattoo Etiquette: How to Be a Good Client - Expert Advice from Alex Bombay
After four decades behind the machine, I have seen it all here at Tattoo Mania Studio in Athlone. I have had the privilege of inking generations of families, marking life's milestones, and turning skin into personal canvases. While my job is to provide the artistry, your job as the client is just as important in determining the final result. Understanding tattoo etiquette isn't just about being polite; it's about creating an environment where I can perform my best work for you. ## Preparation is Key: The Night Before Your Session One of the most common mistakes I see is clients arriving unprepared. A tattoo is a physical challenge for your body, so treat it like you would an athletic event. Get a solid eight hours of sleep the night before. Alcohol is a big no-no; it thins your blood, which makes my job significantly harder and can lead to poor ink saturation. Please eat a hearty meal before you walk through my doors in Athlone. Low blood sugar is the fastest way to feel faint in the chair, and I would much rather focus on your linework than keeping you conscious. ## Hygiene and Professionalism Hygiene is non-negotiable. I work in a sterile, clinical environment, and I expect my clients to meet that standard. Please shower before your appointment and avoid heavy perfumes or colognes, as I will be in close proximity to you for several hours. When it comes to clothing, think about access. If you are getting a thigh piece, wear loose shorts. If it is on your shoulder, a tank top makes everything much easier. If you are unsure, just ask us when booking—we want to ensure you are comfortable. ## The Art of Communication and Patience I love when clients come in with a clear vision, but you must be open to my professional expertise. If you bring a design that won't translate well to skin—due to size, placement, or fading concerns—I am going to tell you. Trusting your artist is the cornerstone of a great tattoo. Additionally, please keep the entourage to a minimum. Bringing five friends to the studio creates a distraction and crowds our workspace. If you need support, one person is plenty. Finally, try to stay as still as possible. I understand that the process can be painful, but sudden movements can lead to shaky lines. Communicate with me if you need a break; we can always pause for a moment to reset. ## Respecting the Process: Aftercare and Fees Respecting your artist also means respecting the time we invest in your design. If you need to reschedule, please give us plenty of notice. Last-minute cancellations are difficult for any small business, especially here in the heart of Athlone. Once the tattoo is finished, the responsibility shifts to you. Follow the aftercare instructions I provide to the letter. A beautiful tattoo can be ruined by poor healing, and I want my work to look as vibrant on you in ten years as it does today. Being a 'good' client is simple: arrive clean, fed, well-rested, and respectful of the artistic process. When we work together as a team, we create something truly lasting. If you are ready to start your next piece or have questions about a design, stop by Tattoo Mania Studio here in Athlone. Let’s sit down, talk through your ideas, and create something exceptional.
