Tattoo Aftercare: The Complete Guide

Getting a new tattoo is an exciting experience, but the work doesn't end when you leave the studio. Proper aftercare is essential to ensure your tattoo heals beautifully and maintains its vibrancy for years to come.

The First 24 Hours

After your session, Alex will wrap your tattoo with a protective film. Keep this wrap on for the recommended time — usually 2–4 hours. When you remove it, gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap.

Days 1–7: The Healing Phase

During the first week, your tattoo will go through several stages:

• Redness and swelling — Normal and should subside within a few days
• Washing — Clean 2–3 times daily with gentle soap and lukewarm water
• Moisturising — Apply a thin layer of tattoo butter or unscented lotion after each wash
• Peeling and flaking — Completely normal, similar to sunburn. Do not pick or scratch

Weeks 2–4: Settling In

The surface should be mostly healed by week two, but deeper layers are still recovering. Continue to moisturise, avoid direct sunlight, stay out of pools and the sea, and wear loose clothing.

Long-Term Care

Once fully healed, protect your tattoo with SPF 50+ sunscreen, keep skin moisturised, and stay hydrated.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

1. Picking at scabs — Can pull ink out and cause scarring
2. Over-moisturising — Too much lotion suffocates the skin
3. Sun exposure — UV rays fade tattoo ink dramatically
4. Swimming — Submersion introduces bacteria
5. Using scented products — Fragrances irritate healing skin
